Rainbow Fish

First, a big thank you to everyone who participated in the BOGO sale yesterday.  Tons of fun!

So last week my kiddos learned about rainbows.  To wrap up our week, we read the story Rainbow Fish.  It's one of my favorite stories...simple and sweet.   I have done this lesson for a few years now.  This lesson originated when I was awarded Teacher of the Year at my old school in Austin.  The superintendent scheduled to visit the schools of all the TOYs in the district.  So when she came to my school, I wanted to make sure I had a lesson that focused on the most important part of my classroom, the students.

After we read the story, we talked about why the Rainbow Fish was special before and after he had all his sparkling scales.  We discussed how our differences make us special.  We talked about how important it is to share our "specials" or gifts with everyone.

Next, we made a list of the reasons why we are special.
Then, I pulled out my giant Rainbow Fish.  It's a huge cut out fish that I made the first time I taught this lesson.  Each year, the kiddos come up and pull out their own special sparkling scale to add to their own fish.  My fish is a little beat up and needs a little TLC...but you get the point.

Each kiddo gets their own mini fish and scales in all colors.  One at a time, the kiddos come up the mega fish and gently remove their own special scale.  They then glue the scale on to their mini fish.
Students are also expected to write three reasons why they are special.  They can choose to use the the reasons we listed as a class or try to write their very own.

I asked the kids to tell me why I was special.  Here are their reasons:
Very cute!
The kids had a lot of fun creating their own mini Rainbow fish.  I had a lot of fun reading their reasons.  Here is one of my favorites!

I know it's a little hard to see but it says..
Three reasons why I am special...
1.  I am gonna be a good doctor.
2.  I have a great teacher.
3.  I have a good mom.

LOVE IT!

I'm going to scan my blackline masters for the fish and the scales (all drawn by hand) and upload them for you sometime this week. So check back soon!

St. Paddy's Day Sale

Hello Y'all!

This week we learned all about rainbows!
My kids loved talking about all the times they've seen rainbows and naming all the colors.

I took a little inspriation from Greg over at Smedley's Smorgasboard. He makes the best hats...he makes hats for everything...seriously...he's amazing!

So I had my little darlings make their very own rainbow hats.  It was a little difficult get the strips staples in but...with a little patience and sore palms we made out just fine.
Here are a few pics...

I decided to model...That's my best attempt at crossing my eyes...pathetic!

Getting to know you...

Happy Monday!
I decided to link up with this fabulous linky party!

Flying into First Grade is hosting her very first linky party and it's all about getting aquainted.

So, I am to share 3 things about myself that I like or do using only my initials.

My initials are VLC! So here we go..

V is for violin!
I played the violin when I was in elementary and middle school.  I gave it up right before I went to high school because I thought I'd be "too busy" to devote time towards practicing...BIG MISTAKE.
I really wish I had kept playing because I really enjoyed it.  When I visited Scotland a few years ago, I bought another violin. It's in my office now...collecting dust...sigh....

L is for Love!
I'm a sap. I love love. I love all kinds of love.  I love it when people love what they do...or show love, compassion, passion.  Those moments make me choke up. They overwhelm me.  I love my future hubby, my family, my friends, my job, my coworkers!

C is for crafts!
I love love love love crafts! I love creating. It's like I go to another place. I get so happy when my product is finished and completed.  I love sharing my work with others! OOOOH crafts.  My love for crafts is the reason why I am slightly stressed about the wedding...I've decided I can make most of the invites, thank you cards, save the dates, and decorations...I'm sure I'll love every moment!

Check back soon...I'm going to have more details about the Sale Extravaganza up soon...you don't want to miss out!

My very last sorry!

Sorry Y'all!
This is the last time I will apologize for not posting in awhile.
Because from now on I will be posting on a regular basis!

I went on vacation back home to Texas.
I ATE SO MUCH!

I know I told y'all about my near fame experience with the show, "I found the gown."  I didn't go through with it but...
I did find my gown!
I found it at a store called Unbridaled in Austin.
It's amazing...I cried.
I would post a pic...but I'm afraid Mr. Roboto might stop by and catch a glimpse..

In between school, cleaning and sleeping...I made a few goodies for your classroom.
First, I wanted to show y'all some pictures of my kiddos Counting the Room.  The LOVE this activity.  I kept the Valentine's day edition up for a little while after V-day.
Here are the pictures.

I was explaining to my kiddos that Friday would be their last opportunity to use the V-day count the room...when one of my kinder darlings says, "Ms. Corbett, can you make one for March?"

Why YES darling I can.  And here it is.  I also added a little extra... Now, your kiddos can practice some addition with a  new recording sheet!  Click here for your own copy.  I'll keep it up for 3 hours tonight..from 6:30-9:30 (EST)
Here's a few pictures of the latest Count the Room.

Cute right?!
I also decided to make a recording sheet for our number of the day.  Each day during our math centers, I give my kiddos a number.  They need to write the number, the number word, draw a representation of the number, and finally, show the number in a ten frame.  Originally, my kiddos were given a blank sheet of paper and sectioning off the areas to record their information.  But they were having the hardest time drawing the ten frames! I don't know how many times I showed them...it drove me bananas.  I kept getting 11 frames, 13 frames...ugh. So I came up with my own version...nothing fancy but it gets the job done.  Here's a few pics.

My kiddo filling in her Number of the day sheet.

And here's a pic of the new recording sheet I made.

Well, I'll end my post with one last picture...
I don't know about you...but my kids leave their cubby areas a HOT MESS. And I'm not shy about letting them know how crazy their area looks! Soo...I have seen some cute fairy cubby notes on Pinterest and I decided to make my own.  I leave the note with some glitter in two of the cleanest cubbies (usually a boy and a girl).  I also include a cute prize so they feel a little extra special.  They never know when the fairy will  show up.
